Where to eat, sip, explore and unwind in regional NSW
The Riverina region is one of Australia’s hidden gems — a patchwork of farmland, food producers, wineries, and natural beauty that makes it the perfect destination for a weekend away or a day trip with a difference. Whether you're travelling solo, exploring with friends, or road-tripping with the family, there’s no shortage of things to do, places to visit, and flavours to experience.
From whisky tastings and fine food to wildlife encounters and local culture, here’s our guide to the best day trips in the Riverina — with the Whitton Malt House leading the way.
Start your day at the Whitton Malt House
If you only visit one place in the Riverina, make it the Whitton Malt House. Set on the banks of Lake Hulong and surrounded by wide open skies, the Malt House is more than just a restaurant — it’s a destination.
Enjoy breakfast or lunch made from seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, explore the whisky cellar, sample craft spirits, or unwind with a drink by the lake. Activities like aqua golf, catch-and-release fishing, and sculpture walks add a fun and unexpected twist for travellers of all ages.
It’s also the perfect base for nature lovers — the Murrumbidgee Valley National Park is just minutes away, offering walking tracks, birdwatching, and tranquil river access for a post-lunch stroll.

Step inside Southern Cotton
Right next door to the Whitton Malt House, you’ll find one of the Riverina’s most impressive agricultural operations: Southern Cotton. This world-class cotton ginning facility offers behind-the-scenes tours where visitors can see first-hand how raw cotton is processed, baled, and prepared for market.
It’s a fascinating, informative experience that celebrates local innovation and gives insight into one of Australia’s most important fibre industries. Tours run during the ginning season (April to September), and bookings are recommended.
A must for curious travellers, students, or anyone interested in where our fibres come from.
Taste your way through the local wine trail
No visit to the Riverina is complete without a vineyard stop (or several). The region is home to some of Australia’s most iconic and innovative wine producers, offering everything from award-winning Shiraz to Italian varietals and cool-climate whites — all with the relaxed hospitality the Riverina is known for.
Here are a few of our favourite cellar doors to explore:
Calabria Family Wines – Griffith
A family-run institution known for bold reds and Mediterranean-style wines, with a warm and welcoming cellar door.
Yarran Wines – Yenda
Boutique and beautifully situated, Yarran offers small-batch wines and unbeatable views over the Cocoparra Ranges.

McWilliam’s Wines Hanwood Estate

Most cellar doors are within 30–45 minutes of Whitton Malt House, making it easy to build a full day of sipping, sampling, and scenery.
A Taste of the Region at Morella Grove
If you’re passionate about food, a visit to Morella Grove in Griffith is a must. Founded by the Dal Bon family, this boutique olive grove produces award-winning extra virgin olive oils, flavoured oils, balsamic vinegars, and gourmet condiments that showcase the best of local ingredients and traditional methods.
Their tasting room offers a flavour-filled experience — perfect for picking up gifts, stocking your pantry, or simply learning more about how high-quality olive oil is grown, pressed and bottled right here in the Riverina.
Morella Grove is just a short drive from many of the region’s top cellar doors and makes an ideal stop on your food and wine trail.
Go wild at Altina Wildlife Park
If you’re travelling with kids — or simply love getting up close with animals — Altina Wildlife Park is a must-see. This unique, behind-the-scenes zoo offers guided safari tours where you’ll encounter rhinos, monkeys, lions, and endangered species in large open habitats.
Located in Darlington Point, just 15 minutes from Whitton, Altina combines conservation with education in a way that’s fun, interactive, and memorable.
